AI Search by the Numbers: The Statistics Business Owners Should Know

July 15, 2026 · 7 minute read

AI-search statistics get repeated until they mutate, so a ground rule for this roundup: every number below is checked against its original source, and the source is named beside it. If a famous stat isn’t here, we couldn’t verify it. Use these freely — they’re the ones that survive scrutiny.

How People Search Now

  • 68% of US Google searches end without a single click to any website — up from about 60% in 2024 (SparkToro/Similarweb, 2026).
  • 900 million people use ChatGPT weekly, sending over 2.5 billion questions a day (OpenAI, via TechCrunch, 2026). Google’s Gemini passed 900 million monthly users (Google I/O, 2026).
  • About 80% of consumers rely on AI-written summaries for at least 40% of their searches (Bain & Company, 2025).
  • Gartner told brands to expect traditional search volume to drop 25% by 2026 (Gartner, 2024).

What the AI Answer Box Does to Clicks

  • When Google shows an AI Overview, only 8% of people click any regular result — versus 15% without one — and just 1% click a source inside the summary (Pew Research Center, 2025).
  • The #1-ranked page loses 58% of its clicks under an AI Overview (Ahrefs, 2026) — the same study measured a 34.5% loss a year earlier, so the squeeze is tightening.
  • AI Overviews appeared on roughly 48% of tracked queries by early 2026 — up from 31% a year earlier — and push the first regular result below the fold (BrightEdge, 2026).
  • Google search sent 2,500+ measured publisher sites 33% less traffic year over year (Chartbeat, via Press Gazette, 2026).

The Local and Buying Numbers

  • 45% of US consumers used AI to find or evaluate a local business in the past year — up from 6% the year before (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • After an AI recommends a local business, 62% of consumers verify it on Google and 58% visit its website; only 7% act with no further research (Yext, 2026).
  • 39% of US shoppers have used generative AI for online shopping, and 54% of Gen Z used it to discover or evaluate products (Adobe, 2025; Salesforce, 2025).

Why Being Named Pays

  • Being the business named inside Google’s AI answer lifts your clicks 35% (Seer Interactive, 2025).
  • Visitors arriving from AI answers become customers at 4.4 times the rate of regular search visitors (Semrush, 2025).
  • In holiday 2025, AI-referred shoppers converted 31% better than every other channel — with AI referral traffic up 693% year over year (Adobe Analytics, 2026).

Reading Them Together

One story runs through all of it: the click economy is shrinking while the answer economy grows, and the value moved to whoever the answer names. Fewer visitors, but each one further along and worth multiples more — provided the AI engines can find, verify, and trust your business enough to say your name. Making that happen, and proving it monthly, is the work we do; if you want these numbers run against your own market, that’s a 30-minute call.
